Martuwarra Fitzroy River Sustainable Heritage Futures Declaration

At the World Archaeology Congress 10th conference (WAC10) held in Darwin, Australia, in June 2025, the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Sustainable Heritage Futures Declaration was proposed in Theme 16/Session 04: Living Water Heritage: Managing the Heritage of Martuwarra/Fitzroy River, Australia in a Time of Social and Environmental Uncertainty. The declaration calls for the protection of Martuwarra (Fitzroy River) as an Ancestral Being and interconnected cultural landscape, advocating sustainable heritage futures, Indigenous governance, First Law, Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), and the wellbeing of Country and community.

The Martuwarra Fitzroy River Sustainable Heritage Futures Declaration was passed by the Plenary at WAC10 on 27 June 2025 and has formally been adopted by the World Archaeological Congress.
