The ‘Majala Centre’: Research, Enterprise, Innovation and Training Hub is located on Balginjirr Community, Mt Anderson Road, Camballin within the Shire of Derby West Kimberley.
The Majala Centre has 12 spacious cabins (6 duplexes), a large auditorium and two ablution blocks.
The idea for the Majala Centre came from the experience Balginjirr community members had pioneering block mode university and community education and training programs in the 1980’s. Block mode allowed Aboriginal student teachers, health workers and social workers from rural and remote regions to come together for intense study/ learning experiences. The method has demonstrated successful outcomes for Indigenous students. It is also a useful method for other people who want to have an intensive burst of knowledge and understanding such as post-graduate students, local youth workshops and professional development programs.
The nearby Lower Liveringa Pool is a mile long billabong nestled in the Martuwarra – Fitzroy River riparian floodplains. Each tropical monsoonal wet season floodwaters stretch across the country connecting the billabong to the river.
Other local attractions include edible and medicinal plants, lizards, snakes and other reptiles, photography, bushwalking and stargazing.
University Groups and tourism operators seeking a bespoke Kimberley experience are encouraged to contact us for more information.
Feedback to date has created the demand for future planning to recognises there is a lack of venues in the region for arts, cultural and entertainment events. Within the next 3 years we will extend the opportunity for Majala Centre to become a multi-purpose centre with the capacity to be hired out and to host cultural, musical and artistic events.
